Born to the melodies of life, Jimmy emerged as a musical force destined for greatness. Hailing from Atlanta, GA, Jimmy was introduced to music by his father Jimmy Gates, Sr., who was known for his Blues and R&B Band Downtown Atlanta. Jimmy cultivated a deep love for music from an early age. Influenced by the soulful sounds of legends like the Gospel Group Commission and Earth, Wind, and Fire. Jimmy found his own unique voice, a voice that would later become the soundtrack to the lives of millions.

Jimmy’s Group SILK is best known for their hit singles, "Freak Me" and "Happy Days" from their debut album, Lose Control. Another hit from Lose Control, "Girl U For Me", helped the album reach Multi-Platinum status. They later had success with singles such as "I Can Go Deep", "Hooked on You", "Don't Rush", "If You", "Meeting in My Bedroom", and "We're Calling You." SILK was discovered by Louise Ferguson and their Debut Album Loss Control was released in 1993 by Keith Sweat and Electra Records.
